What is detox? Why do we need to do detox, what’s the benefit of it? As we all know, detox is short for detoxification and the purpose of it is to remove toxins from our body. That was by far, the understanding that I knew about detox. Until one of my friend gave me all this rave about the detox diet or so called, master cleanse, that she’d been doing. At first it didn’t sound right to me. For the whole 10 days, she ate nothing but the lemon mixing juice thingy that she’d prepared. I love food and the thought of not having solid food for 10 days was quite freaking me out.
Still not convinced, I did a research myself on the point of detoxing. Well, here’s what I got.
Why detox? Unhealthy lifestyles and environmental factors cause toxins to build up in our systems and these toxins will create a lot of health problems to our bodies. These include weight gain, cellulite, headaches, dull skin, bloating, fatigue, etc (all that sound very familiar to me) and the process of detoxing will help to remove these toxins out of our bodies.
Well, sick of feeling tired and bloated all the time, I decided to have a look at the master cleanse that my friend been raving about. Apparently, this detox diet is quite popular among the celebrities too. Beyonce and Mariah Carey are said to be huge fans of this diet.
After a week of following the detox, it was quite surprising even to myself. I can now confidently tell you the goodness of this detox. This is something that I really tried and experienced.
-It makes you lose weight I lose a total of 4 kg in a week following the detox. I wasn’t initially planned to lose weight, so this come as an extra bonus to me. -It makes you feeling more energetic I didn’t eat anything for a week, yet I feel more energised than before. -It makes your skin glow My skin becomes brighter and the pores become smaller. It could be just my imagination, but I’m still feeling great and confident about it. -It makes you sleep better at night
I was a bit skeptical about this diet before, thinking that I wouldn’t even pass the first day. Well, the first couple of days were indeed the hardest, but after your body get used to it, it’s just getting easier and easier and without realising, I feel more energetic and lighter.

The phrase “detox diets” specifically refers to a class of diets that help in discharging toxins accumulated in the body. One of the major reasons for a detox diet is overeating during special occasions.
The human body is exposed to toxins of undefined nature either from the food they eat, the environment, and its own waste. As these toxins increase, the human body is exposed to a number of illnesses like weight gain, cellulite, headaches, dull skin, fatigue, aches and pains, and a lowered immunity.
Detox diets are said to be very helpful in purging the toxins from the body. In a detox diet, people consume only fruits, vegetables and unprocessed natural food. Fresh homemade vegetables are also used along with a detox diet. Detox diets are said to destroy the environmental toxins contained in water, food, and the air that are found in the human body.
The ingredients of almost all detox diets can be described as liver tonics (milk thistle, barberry, dandelion), digestive aids (ginger, globe artichoke, peppermint) and laxatives (fennel, Psyillum) and diuretics (birch, dandelion). Some Detox diets consist of lemon in warm water, flaxseeds, and bentonite clay for breakfast. Lunch consists of salads of tomato, lettuce, cucumber, peppers, corn, kidney beans, low fat cheese, and peas. For dinner, the detox diet recommends apples, low fat free yogurt and fruits like apple, oranges, nectarines, and peaches.
A detox diet contains approximately 600-750 Kcals per day. It strictly forbids meat, fish, alcohol, and stimulants like coffee. Detox diets are known to make a person feel better, even lighter, but there is little scientific evidence of any good coming out of it.
The basic flaw with detox diets is their concept that meat has a higher level of toxins than fruits and vegetables. In reality, some fruits like cabbage and onions have high toxic levels, while fish and meat have fewer toxins. The liver can effectively break down and eliminate toxins under a protein high diet.
A healthy daily diet contains fruits, vegetables, and meat in equal portions. It should contain meat, dairy products, carbohydrates, and portions of fruits and vegetables.

Detox, or detoxification is the process of neutralizing or eliminating toxins from the body.
Toxins are chemicals that we take into our bodies such as oral contraceptives, perfume and after shave, cigarette smoke and alcohol, food additives, pesticides, cleaning agents and Mercury. Our bodies naturally detoxify these chemicals and excrete them via our stools or urine.
So why the need to aid detoxification?
Experts believe that the sheer amount of toxins that we take into our bodies every day via water food and the environment can accumulate. The build up of toxins can be so great that our bodies cannot detoxify efficiently which can lead to nutritional deficiencies, an inefficient metabolism and hormonal imbalances.
Symptoms can be lethargy, dull skin, allergies and occasionally pain. Over time, toxic build up is believed to lead to disease.
A detox diet, using herbs and supplements or a special diet, is believed to help strengthen the organs used for detoxification and promote the excretion of stored toxins through the skin, liver, lungs, kidneys, intestines and lymphatic system.
Detox diets are thought to prevent chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease. People using detox diets report that it relieves symptoms such as lethargy and fatigue, joint pain and headaches, pmt and irritability, constipation and gas and also improves their skin.
Toxicity symptoms can be similar to other illnesses so before you embark on a detox diet it is best to discuss your symptoms with your health care provider.
Whilst you are on a detox diet, it is quite normal for your symptoms to get worse for a short period, for instance you may experience more headaches and other pains and drier or oilier skin, and this is due to the toxins all passing through your body in large quantities. Generally these symptoms pass within a few days.
