More and more people are starting to hear talk about the many different detox diet plans that are currently on the market.

Curiosity often surrounds these are they are very different from a more traditional approach, and many people are saying that they feel great when using them.

But, are detox diet plans really safe? Or, would you be better off sticking with another diet program plan?

Here’s what you need to consider.

Duration of the Detox Diet

The first thing to think about is how long the particular detox diet you’re considering is going to last. Is it a one week plan? A month long plan? Longer?

The time period on which you’ll be using the detox diet is significantly going to impact how safe it is for you to use.

You must realize that most of the detox diets out there are not going to be nutritionally balance – most will be severely lacking in protein and potentially carbohydrates and healthy fats as well.

If you happen to be considering a detox diet that is pretty much just a fast entirely, then it’s a whole new ball game because you won’t be taking in many nutrients at all.

Activity Levels While On The Detox Diet

Next up, look at what type of activity levels you’ll likely be experiencing while using the detox diet.

Most detox diets will recommend that you reduce back your activities significantly, if not take time completely away from any formal type of exercise program as you simply will not have the energy to do so.

If you are stubborn though and insist on doing some form of workouts, you are likely putting your lean muscle mass at a great risk.

Detox diets and exercise do not go together at all, and ignoring this fact could mean really damaging your metabolism.

Supplementation While On The Detox Diet

Finally, the last point you want to think about is whether or not you’ll be using any type of supplementation while on the detox diet plan.

If your detox diet contains little more than lemonade and some spices, you most certainly should be taking a multi-vitamin to back up your nutritional needs.

If you are taking in unlimited quantities of fruits and vegetables on your detox diet, then you may be able to go without if you usually don’t take a supplement, but I wouldn’t really recommend it.

A good vitamin is usually always a smart idea just to make sure you’re not falling short in any one particular mineral or vitamin.

So, be sure to keep these factors in mind before going on a detox diet.

If you wanted to make your detox diet safer and were thinking of doing it over a longer time span, I’d strongly recommend that you add additional protein (at least one gram per pound of body weight) to the plan to help you maintain your lean muscle mass.
